The Long Story:
Carolyn Murray has owned and operated The Canny Canine dog training in Bozeman since 2012. She entered the world of dog sports in 2015 and has since successfully trained, trialed, and titled multiple dogs across various sport venues. More importantly, her students are achieving multiple titles, trial placements, and high in trial designations in K9 Nose Work.
Carolyn has created an inclusive community for all levels of K9 Nose Work handlers, where competition is not required! With over a decade of experience in dog training and thousands of hours spent observing canine behavior, she has developed a deep understanding of engagement and motivation in our canine friends.
When she’s not teaching obedience or K9 Nose Work classes, Carolyn can be found training both of her German Shepherds in all three phases of IGP (Schutzhund). This sport checks all the boxes for Carolyn, as it includes precise obedience, footstep tracking, and protection. It requires dogs to be happy and open with good emotion during performances—a concept she emphasizes in every aspect of her dog training.
Over the years, Carolyn has sought out various trainers and clinics, allowing her to absorb a wealth of ideas and methodologies across different sports. She remains most influenced by trainers who are highly skilled in engagement and motivation, keeping an eye on each dog's individuality.
Carolyn specializes in K9 Nose Work® classes, obedience classes, and is available for AKC Certificate/Title program testing, including AKC STAR puppy, Canine Good Citizen, and Trick Dog.
Training Methodology
The Canny Canine was founded on the straightforward belief that pet owners who actively engage in dog training have a stronger bond with their dogs, leading to a happier and more well-behaved pet. Carolyn has developed a distinctive classroom environment where she collaborates with clients to set and achieve specific training goals tailored to individual needs.
There are numerous methods available for training your dog, but The Canny Canine emphasizes the use of motivational techniques to cultivate thinking dogs who are eager to perform. We understand that dogs don’t decide to compete on their own; hence, our approach in all of our classes and activities prioritize the following principles:
- We focus on handler accountability.
- We employ motivational methods to foster a collaborative TEAM between dog and handler.
- We reward our dogs with “high salaries” involving food or toys.
- We incorporate play into our training.
- And we acknowledge that sometimes, “It Depends.”
Dog sports, including K9 Nose Work, offer an exciting and fulfilling way to strengthen your relationship with your dog. All of our programs are designed for the average family pet that simply wants to have some fun! Come join us!

Lemmy competes in NACSW K9 Nose Work at the Elite level. He also trains in tracking (loves hard surface!), obedience and protection. When not working he can be found sunbathing, snoozing, or demanding to play fetch.

Ozzy has started his foundation training in Tracking, Protection, and Obeidence. He's off to a wild start in his competitive K9 Nose Work career successfully earning his ORT, NW1, and NW2 titles in less than three months and currently competing at the NW3 level.
With a star studded pedigree and rock solid genetics, we look forward to the journey with this spicey young man!
